In the heat of the summer, we often seek shelter under trees. We look for the cooling shadow that they provide to park our cars under, so that later we don’t burn our hands on the steering wheel or scorch our thigh with a hot seatbelt. When you go to the park for a summer picnic you seek out a table under the overhang of a large oak, rather than one in the bright sun.

Trees are a luxury that we don’t think about much. They stand strong and silent providing us essential shade, clean air and water, beauty, and much more. They are shown to improve mental health, spending time among trees or just looking at trees can relieve stress and boost mood. Trees are essential habitat spaces for wildlife; they shade overheated animals and birds as well as providing them food through their seeds and leaves.

Trees are important for climate resilience. Wildfire smoke from Canada has become a yearly issue, as it drifts down to the Midwest each summer. Trees can act as a barrier for the pollutants in the smoke. The particles settle on leaves and stick instead of going into our lungs, then when the rain comes the pollutants get washed away. Trees can help save money too! If placed near an outside AC unit, or if they shade part of the house, the air conditioning doesn’t have to work as hard to get our homes to a comfortable temperature. Check out our tree benefits page for more information about all the good things that trees bring. Rock River Coalition wants to bring these benefits to Beloit, so sign up for a free tree today!
