New Zealand Mudsnail Monitoring Training

Want to protect local wildlife? Wade in Token Creek with us at Rock River Coalition’s invasive mudsnail monitoring training. Learn how to identify, report, and prevent the spread of one of the state’s most ‘prohibited’ invasive species, the New Zealand Mudsnail.
New Zealand Mudsnails compete with our native stream invertebrate species for food. They offer little to no nutritional value when consumed by fish like trout as they often pass through their digestive systems unharmed. Due to their small size, ability to reproduce with just one individual, and their ability to survive out of water for almost a month, closely monitoring their spread is of vital importance.
Once trained, volunteers are encouraged to adopt local stream sites to monitor annually. Snail searches will happen once per summer and are estimated to take 30 minutes to an hour per site. Volunteers can search for snails whenever is convenient for them, and supplies are provided.
